Isn’t it true that when we do something nice for someone we expect that person to be nice to us? And when we are loving towards someone, we expect that same kind of treatment in return?
Luke 6:35 says “But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.”
When we love as God loves and, like Him, are “kind to ungrateful and evil men” we find we need to love without any thought of personal reward.
We need God’s Spirit to be at work in us if we are to truly love as Christ would have us love.
And here’s another thought from God’s Word to help us. We are to love and serve as if the person before us were Jesus Himself. In John 13:34 Jesus himself says “A new commandment I give you, that You love one another, as I have loved you.”
You see the love that the Bible tells us to extend in our marriage, our home, our neighborhood, our church, and the world at large is not self-seeking. Instead it expects nothing personal in return. Its only intent is to love as Jesus loved while praying for others to respond to God’s message of love through us.
How are you going to show love today to the world at large?
