Developing your Relationship with Christ (Part 2)

There are many different ways that you can develop your relationship with God. In this article I will highlight seven such ways. I have attempted to define each method below so that you can better understand the meaning of each method, as well as my own personal experience.

As you read this article, please bear in mind that developing your relationship with God cannot be accomplished by following a list of do’s and don’ts but it is a mutual love relationship. Use the below as a way to develop your love for God instead of following a to-do list.

WORSHIP: Many people attend worship concerts to sing and praise God for what he has done in their life, and for who he is as their Savior. The music draws them closer to Jesus, and it gives them the opportunity to share the experience with other believers.

But worshiping God is more than just the songs we listen to. Worship is an attitude of reverence toward God. To worship God means that we show both appreciation for what God has done in our life and adoration for how much we love Him. I also love to go to Christian concerts where the music was awesome, and I would enjoy fellowship with other believers. But it wasn’t until recently that I found myself really connecting to God in my praise and worship. I became really thankful for all that God was doing in my life. For all of the hard times He has brought me through, and the way He is using my life to impact others. My worship was more than just music it was an opportunity to express sincere gratitude to a Savior I loved with all of my heart.

What about you? What does worship mean to you?

PRAYER: I once use to think that prayer was the scariest thing in the world to do. After all, I was talking to the king of the universe who knew everything about me. However, the more I did it the more I realized that talking to God is like talking to your close friends. In prayer, you can tell God anything ( he knows it all anyhow) without fear of condemnation or ridicule. Many people have attempted to use methods on how to prayer. My favorite is A.C.T.S as shown below.

Adoration:  Give God praise and honor for who he is as Lord over all.
Confession:  Honestly deal with the sin in your prayer life.
Thanksgiving:  Verbalize what you’re grateful for in your life and in the world around you.
Supplication:  Pray for the needs of others and yourself.

You can use this method to guide you in how to pray to God. Or use whatever fashion you feel is comfortable. The main thing about prayer is that it is communication with God. Anytime, anywhere, any circumstance he just wants to hear from you.

JOURNAL: Journaling is a recent tactic that I began using this year. Some people are natural writers and therefore prefer to use their journal to develop their relationship with God. For example, instead of saying your prayers out loud, you can write your prayers in your journal. You can use your journal for anything like 1) listing things you are grateful for, 2) your prayer request, and 3) you can use your journal for prayers that God has answered.

FELLOWSHIP: Very few believers that I meet are able to have a deep and personal relationship without fellowship with other Christian believers. Fellowship with others allows for opportunities to meet other Christians and develop close relationships. Believers encourage motivate, challenge, and provide insight you never knew before. Some of my closest friends are those believers that have been with me in the hard times of my life. And I am happy to lean on their counsel and to do the same for them in return.

QUALITY TIME: Many people have bibles in their homes but in order to glean anything from it we have to take the time to study and apply what we read on a daily basis. You cannot learn the bible by osmosis. It needs to be studied.

This is something that I am still learning. And I believe I will have to continue to learn regularly. You will never reach a point in your walk with God where you know everything about Christianity. So spending quality time with God and reading the bible are very important.

In this method I challenge you to make quality time with God a top priority. If you need a definition of quality time let me put it to you this way?

If you were in a dating relationship with someone you loved but they could only spend 5 minutes a day with you, would you say that you have a close relationship with that person.

It is the same with God? In order for you to have a close relationship with God you cannot expect to spend 5 minutes a day with him. It has to be continual.

BIBLE STUDY: There are many resources you can use to know how study your bible. Countless books and articles have been written on the subject. I would suggest investing the time to seek out these resources. Schedule time in your day when you are going to study your bible so that it becomes a habit. Always have your bible and notebook handy in case you need to make a special note of something. As a tip I often use YouVersion.com as a tool that can help me study the bible regularly. SHARING YOUR FAITH WITH OTHERS: Matthew 28:16-20 is referred to as The Great Commission by Jesus Christ. Here Jesus gives his disciples authority to go into all the world and preach the gospel. And he gives us the comforting promise that say “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

What about you? Are you sharing your faith with other people?

With love and best wishes,

Stephanie
